Additional funding opportunities for DFG large-scale research equipment : Date:
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is launching a pilot programme until the end of 2025 that opens new opportunities in Major Instrumentation funding. As part of the programme, existing major instruments can be renewed or upgraded for extended use in research. An online information event about the programme is planned for mid-May.
With this pilot programme, the DFG wants to enable applicants to use existing equipment in research for longer and more sustainably. The renewal option is not limited to DFG-funded equipment but includes the upgrading of large-scale equipment of any origin.
The pilot programme is of particular interest to universities of applied sciences, as it includes special conditions for UAS. For major instrumentation with an original purchase value of over 200,000 euros, applications for upgrading can be submitted for amounts of 100,000 euros or more. UAS, however, can also submit applications for existing equipment with a purchase value of 100,000 to 200,000 euros for upgrades of at least 50,000 euros.
The DFG Committee on Scientific Instrumentation and Information Technology sees a significant need in this area. It is expected that new procurements can be avoided or significantly delayed through renewals. The refurbished equipment can then be used in a different environment as well. Moreover, the programme is intended as a signal and impulse to manufacturers that modularity, compatibility, interoperability, and a long-term utilisation perspective are becoming increasingly important in the financing of device infrastructures.
The pilot programme is limited in time and runs from the beginning of July to the end of December 2025. The application must describe the major instrumentation to be renewed and the extended utilisation perspective resulting from the renewal.
As usual, the DGF is offering a free digital information event on the pilot programme. This will take place on 13 May 2025, from 1 pm to 3 pm.
